nominee mitt romney are campaigning today but their running mates are taking to the stage. vice president joe biden will rally in florida around 9:00 this morning. meanwhile, republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is in new hampshire. this is not a live picture, but him at the event from this morning. despite the small size, new hampshire has become a key battle ground state. ryan was there just last week. the latest polls show the president ahead of mitt romney in nine battle ground states. mr. obama's biggest leads are in ohio, new hampshire, and iowa. of course, this could change in the weeks to come. the tightest races at this point are nevada and north carolina. the national average of those polled has president obama with a 49.5%, the potential vote 44% for romney. >>>in this weekend's presidential address president obama is calling on congress to help homeowners. >> last week mortgage rates were at historic lows. but instead of helping more and more hard working families take advantage of those rates. congress was away on break. instead of worrying about you they had alre

one of the roughest couple of weeks, mitt romney's campaign is focused on jump starting the defense and economic message with many republicans pressing him to sharpen his tone. looking to restore confidence in his campaign, a defiantly optimistic mitt romney rallied supporters under the lights in denver late sunday >> i need your help. we have got to stand together. we have got to work together. we're taking back america. we must keep this nation the hope of the earth. >> reporter: earlier romney refused to concede he's an underdog in a series of battleground states and accused the president of distorting his positions. >> i'm did not going to try to fool people into making people think things he doesn't. he's trying to fool people to make them believe i think things that i don't. >> reporter: privately romney and the president have been preparing for the debates, the first here in denver next week, but publicly the two campaigns are trying to lower expectations, even complimenting their opponent's debate skills. for his part on "60 minutes" president obama defended his record, whil
end. and then -- but if romney wins it, you would see them all extended. is there one that would have a better outcome in your view? >> you know, i think there's a -- there's a tension between two different things here. on the one hand, there's a sense that in the very near term with a weak overall economic performance continuing that raising levels of taxes wherever in the distribution may have some negative effects on economic growth. and then there's a harder long-term question, frankly, which is how tax rates on capital gains, on dividends which feed through a somewhat complicated channel by encouraging various kinds of saving activity and ultimately lowering the cost of capital to businesses and encouraging investment, how that translates into long-term economic growth. that is frankly a difficult chain to try to measure in any precise way, and consequently it's harder to be able to trace through the quantitative impacts on growth to follow through on channels for that. >> to follow-up on that, which plan, do you think it's problematic for the economy at this point to have taxes
